[press release] 栃原比比奈｜Hiina Tochihara ｜“The other side”開催のお知らせ
このたび、BEAK585では2025年11月7日（金）から29日（土）までの会期で栃原比比奈の新作絵画の展覧会「The other side」を開催いたします。
大阪での個展は今回で3回目となります。2025年はアートフェア東京の後のオランダ・ドイツ・ベルギーの旅で刺激を受け、考え方や描くことについて改めて思考する時間を持てたことから、自分自身の変化を楽しんでいると栃原は言います。
精力的に進化する栃原の絵を、ぜひご高覧願います。
Statement
絵になるまで、言葉にならない何かがずっと頭の片隅にあって、そのことへのいら立ちは静かな怒りになる。空気のような何かが飽和状態になろうとしている。小さな容器には収まりきらない。圧力がかかって何処かに抜けたいと思ったりする。内側に抱えられなくなったイメージが破裂したように絵になる。キャンバスの向こう側には確かに待っているイメージがある。けれどそこにたどり着くまではたどり着けないという、不思議なルールがあるように思う。
向こう側に行きたいと思う時、こちら側にいることを実感する。こちら側にいるんだと思うと、何もかもが分かりやすくて物足りなくてつまらない。まなざしをこちらに向けるのは安全だ。しかし、こちらにいてこちらに向けるまなざしは、本当にこちらを見つめる位置なのだろうか？こちらにいて向こう側を見つめようとすると、あべこべな違和感がある。
今回の展覧会では向こう側からテーマを見つめようとした結果として生まれた絵を展示したいと思っている。今まではこちら側に安穏と住んでいて、当然のように見える世界を絵にすることが、ある種の義務であり、檻のようで窮屈だった。
向こう側への意識が生まれたのは今年に入ってからだと思う。向こう側に行きたいというエネルギーの高まりは最近の私の変化だ。こちら側ではなくて向こう側へ意識を持っていく。そうすることで目の前の世界が違って見える。
Until it becomes a painting, something beyond words lingers in the back of my mind, and my frustration over it turns into a quiet rage. Something like air is reaching a saturation point. It won’t fit in a small container. Pressure builds, and I feel like it wants to escape somewhere. Images I can no longer hold inside burst forth, becoming paintings. Beyond the canvas, there is definitely an image waiting. Yet, it feels like there’s a strange rule: you can’t reach it until you’ve reached it.
When I want to go to the other side, I realize I’m on this side. When I think I’m on this side, everything feels too easy to understand, unsatisfying, and boring. Turning my gaze this way feels safe. But is this gaze, directed this way while I’m here, truly looking at this side? Trying to gaze at the other side while staying here creates a strange, reversed sense of discomfort.
For this exhibition, I want to show paintings born from trying to view the theme from the other side. Until now, living comfortably on this side and painting the world that seemed so natural felt like a kind of obligation, like a cage, suffocating.
I think my awareness of the other side emerged this year. The rising energy to go there is a recent change in me. Shifting my consciousness not to this side, but to the other side. Doing so makes the world before my eyes look different.
